The Somali Embassy in Yemen announced that it will resume issuing national passports to Somali citizens residing in the country, ending an eight-year suspension that had left thousands without access to essential travel documents.
Ambassador Abdihakin Mohamed Ahmed announced the restoration of passport services during a press briefing in Aden, saying “After nearly eight years, we have resumed issuing passports, which is a fundamental right of every citizen,”.
The decision comes in response to long-standing appeals from Somali nationals, particularly students and job seekers, who faced significant challenges due to the lack of valid documentation. Many had been unable to travel, enroll in academic institutions, or access basic services.
The resumption of passport services marks a critical step in restoring consular support and mobility for Somali citizens abroad, reinforcing the embassy’s role in safeguarding the rights and dignity of its nationals.
