On the 43nd anniversary of the founding of the General People's Congress (GPC), on of leading political parties in Yemen , its current leadership, members and supporters are reflecting on the party’s significant contributions to Yemeni developments since 1983.
They believe that the GPC when it was founded under the leadership of the late President Ali Abdullah Saleh has served bringing together diverse political groups under a single umbrella.
They also believe that GPC foundation marked a crucial turning point in Yemen's political landscape, fostering democracy and enhancing political life.
The GPC's founding came at a time when North Yemen desperately needed to be reunited with South Yemen, so the party played a significant role as a unifying force, bringing about stability in Yemen.
Today, its current leadership, members and supporters inside and outside Yemen are emphasizing the party’s increased responsibility on the GPC and all Yemeni political forces to work towards restoring the Yemeni state and building a modern, democratic society, with a strong emphasis on political pluralism and democracy.
Meanwhile sources within the GPC’s Standing Committee in Sana’a explained that the decision to cancel any events recalling or celebrating the 43nd anniversary of the founding of party came after escalating pressure from the Houthi rebels, who had placed some of the GPC leaders under house arrest and banned gatherings of pro-GPC tribal sheikhs.
These measures, according to GPC’s sources were accompanied by Houthi rebels’ threats and arrests targeting prominent members, viewed as a continuation of the harassment against its leaders and members.
