U.S. Special Envoy to Yemen Timothy Lenderking said Iran has low-cost, high benefit from supporting the Houthi rebels over the years.
In a recent interview with Washington Journal C.Span Lenderking added that the Iranians “put in a relatively small amount of money getting a big bang for their buck”.
Speaking about the Houthi rebels Lenderking said they do not govern the areas under their control by popularity , but they impose their will on the Yemeni people through intimidation.
Lenderking said the U.S. forces operations to deter Houthi rebels attacks in the Red sea , have been very effective, adding that the U.S. forces are bombing Hoiuti rebels military capability that they are using to attack ships in the Red Sea , not the people of Yemen or the Houthi people.
Lenderking noticed that the U.S. goals in Yemen remain a durable ceasefire and Yemen-Yemeni political negotiations that will allow Yemenis to decide the future of their country.
He concluded saying as the envoy for Yemen, and given a a very specific mission , his focus is to help the humanitarian crisis in Yemen and help drive efforts toward a ceasefire.
