The Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Yemen, Hans Grundberg reiterated the Secretary-General’s calls for de-escalation in the region and the Red Sea and stressed the need to safeguard the progress made on peace mediation efforts in Yemen.
Grundberg visited the U.S and held meetings with senior American officials in Washington DC Friday to discuss recent developments and explore ways to facilitate progress towards resuming an inclusive Yemeni-led political process under UN auspices and a lasting resolution of the conflict.
During the meetings, Grundberg emphasized the paramount importance of sustaining regional and international concerted support to the parties to finalize a UN roadmap that operationalizes their commitments to a nationwide ceasefire, measures to improve living conditions in Yemen, and the resumption of a political process to reach an inclusive and sustainable settlement of the conflict.
Before heading to Washington DC, Grundberg briefed the Security Council in New York on the current situation in Yemen in an open session on Thursday in which he, as he briefed the Council last month, admitted that the mediation space in Yemen has grown more complex. and continues to be the case.
Grundberg said “Although we have tried to shield the peace process from regional developments since the war in Gaza, the reality is, and allow me to repeat myself, that what happens regionally impacts Yemen—and what happens in Yemen can impact the region”.
