Yemen’s Army Chief of Staff survived an assassination attempt on Tuesday in Marib to the east of Yemen. A booby-trapped car detonated when the convoy of Yemeni Army Chief of Staff Saghir bin Aziz was traveling in Wadi Abidah in Marib province, security sources in Marib told Sheba Intelligence. Some bodyguards were wounded in the blast.
In an audio recording obtained by Sheba Intelligence, bin Aziz said in his first comment, “God will prolong our lives until we rid our people of the Houthis.”
A security source accused the Houthis of being behind the attempt to assassinate bin Aziz. He told Sheba Intelligence that the explosion occurred in Wadi Ubaida, near Harib Junction on the Raju border, an area where Houthi militants keep hiding.
Sheba Intelligence obtained exclusive photos of the remains of the car bomb. The information about the vehicle shows that it is manufactured by Toyota manufactured in 2010, and it is a Land Cruiser model. It is a multi-purpose vehicle bearing serial number JTMHTO9J4A5072684.
The Yemeni Armed Forces Media Center said that the Minister of Defense, Lieutenant General Mohsen Al-Daeri, spoke to bin Aziz on the phone and condemned this “cowardly” act. He also ordered a rapid investigation into the matter.
Sheba Intelligence obtained a video from one of the surveillance cameras which documented the moment of the explosion of the car bomb that targeted the Chief of Staff of the Yemeni Army, Saghir bin Aziz.
