The United Arab Emirates AID Agency is set to build a new hospital in Aden to boost the healthcare sector in the city and the surrounding areas under a new agreement.

The governor of Aden Ahmed Hamed Lamlas and Sultan Mohamed Al Shamsi, Vice Chairman of the UAE Aid Agency signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)  to construct the hospital that will include outpatient clinics and specialized units for emergency, sterilization, radiology and intensive care. It will also feature dedicated wards for men, women and children.

“It reflects the enduring legacy and values of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and is in line with the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to improve living conditions of the Yemeni people,” stated Sultan Mohamed Al Shamsi, Vice Chairman of the UAE Aid Agency.

While Lamlas expressed his gratitude to the UAE leadership for their unwavering support for Yemen and underscored the importance of the hospital, which he said would significantly enhance healthcare services in the city. No timeline for the launch of the hospital was shared

Earlier On Monday, May 5, Lamlas signed another agreement to expand the capacity of the Aden solar power plant by adding 120 megawatts to the facility located in the Bir Ahmed area of the capital, Aden. The expansion will be funded by the United Arab Emirates.

The signing ceremony was attended by Yemen’s Internationally Recognized Government Minister of Electricity and Energy, Eng. Manea Bin Yameen, the Governor of Aden, Ahmed Hamed Lamlas, and the Director-General of the Public Electricity Corporation, Eng. Mujib Al-Shuaibi. Representing the Emirati side was Ali Al-Shammari, Managing Director and CEO of Global South Utilities (GSU)

The expansion, which is expected to significantly boost the plant’s generation capacity, will help ease the chronic electricity crisis in Aden, particularly during the summer season when power demand peaks.

The plant’s expansion marks the second phase of a broader project aimed at eventually reaching a total production capacity of 650 megawatts.

The signing of the agreement comes amid a severe power crisis in Aden, where daily blackouts exceed 22 hours, amid a persistent shortage of fuel supplies and sharp production deficits. Meanwhile, the neighboring governorates of Lahij, Abyan, and Al-Dhalea have experienced near-total power outages for over 20 consecutive days, further compounding the suffering of residents as summer approaches.
