A new report from the Global Hunger Index (GHI) paints a bleak picture of the world's ongoing struggle with hunger. If current progress rates persist, many of the world's poorest countries will continue to face severe food insecurity for the next century and a half.

The 2024 GHI found that at least 64 nations will not achieve even low hunger levels until the year 2160, based on the pace of progress since 2016. The report highlights the alarming reality of serious or alarming hunger levels in 42 countries and the stagnation of efforts to address this crisis.

Among the countries with the most severe hunger levels is Yemen, whose food crisis is a direct, man-made result of the war. Since 2015, the economy has halved, and more than 80% Yemenis now live below the poverty line. The collapse of incomes and increase in prices have pushed food beyond many people’s reach.
