In his first open briefing to the Security Council for 2024, UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg said that there are worrying developments inside Yemen and warned that the path to peace now faces more challenges.
Grundberg added that there is no reason Yemenis should be condemned to conditions of war, poverty and repression noticing that the parties committed to a nationwide ceasefire, measures to improve living conditions, restarting an intra-Yemeni political process... and to work with his Office to operationalize these commitments through a UN roadmap agreement.
Grundberg appealed to members of the Security Council to a consider their collective responsibility to protect the mediation space and ensure Yemenis have a chance at peace.
